Zip or compress a PDF: what really shrinks it

Published 2026-08-26 · Education

You zip a file to email it, work on a PDF and find that nothing got smaller. Here is why ZIP barely helps a PDF and what actually reduces its size.

Compressing a large PDF file into a smaller one

Why zipping a PDF does almost nothing

ZIP compresses by finding repeated patterns. PDFs are already compressed internally: the text and images are stored in a compact form, so there is little repetition left for ZIP to remove. The result is often a file that stays about the same size, or barely smaller, which is why zipping is the wrong tool here.

How PDF compression really works

A PDF shrinks mainly through its images. High-resolution photos and scans carry most of the weight. Compressing the PDF re-encodes those images at a lower resolution or with a more efficient format, cutting the file size while keeping the text intact. This is the opposite of ZIP: it looks inside the document instead of wrapping it.

Two levels: normal and maximum

A compressor such as compress a PDF proposes two modes. Normal keeps the text selectable and typically saves 15 to 30 percent. Maximum re-encodes every page as a compressed image, which can cut a scan dramatically but makes the text no longer selectable. Choose normal for documents where the text must stay editable.

Which wins in each situation

ZIP wins when you bundle many files of different types into one archive or when a document is unusually loose. PDF compression wins the moment the PDF itself is the thing you need to send. For a single heavy document, always compress the PDF rather than zipping it.

A practical workflow

When a file stays too big, first compress it, then check the saving percentage. If the result is heavy because it mixes many scanned pages, convert those pages to images with PDF to Image or rebuild from lighter images with Images to PDF.
