Scan documents to PDF with your phone camera
Published 2026-09-21 · Tutorial
Your phone camera is a full document scanner and it is already in your pocket. Instead of buying a scanner or hunting for an office machine, you can turn a contract, a receipt or a handwritten note into a clean PDF in under a minute. The built-in scan feature in your camera app handles the tricky parts: it straightens the page, crops the edges, and saves the result as a proper PDF you can combine, shrink and send. Here is how to scan documents to PDF with your phone camera on iPhone and Android, and how to make the file actually look good.
Why a phone scan beats a plain photo
A photograph of a document is a picture: it keeps the background, the lens distortion and the shadows, and it stores the text as pixels. A scan, even one done with a phone camera, detects the page edges, flattens the perspective and removes the background so only the document remains. That matters because a clean scan reads better, prints cleaner and, when you extract the text with OCR, produces far more accurate results. The camera app does the transformation for you automatically, which is why a scan beats a photo in almost every case.
iPhone: use the built-in scanner
On iPhone the scanner lives inside the Notes app. Open a new note, tap the camera icon, then choose Scan Documents. Line the document up in the frame and iOS captures it, mostly automatically detecting the edges and correcting the angle. You can scan several pages in one pass by tapping the shutter again, then tap Save. The result is stored in your note where you can rotate, crop or rename it before you turn it into a PDF and share it from the share sheet.
Android: scan straight from the camera app
On many Android phones the camera app includes a Scan or Document mode that switches on as soon as it detects a page in the frame. When you see the yellow scan button, tap it instead of the shutter and the phone captures just the document, warping it flat and cropping the margins. If your camera app has no scan mode, use Google Drive: tap the plus button, choose Scan, and it reads the pages and stores them as a PDF in your Drive, ready to download or send.
Light, angle and framing make the difference
The quality of a phone scan comes down to three things you control before you tap. Put the document on a flat, contrasting surface so the edges are obvious. Shoot from directly above, holding the phone parallel to the page, because an angle warps the text even after auto-correction. And avoid heavy shadows: if the room is dark, move to even light or turn on the phone flash, but do not let the flash glare on glossy paper. Retake a page that comes out blurry or cut off, because a crisp source gives a much smaller and cleaner file afterwards.
Assemble the pages into one file
Most documents you scan have more than one page. Scan them all in the same session so your camera groups them, then combine anything scanned separately into a single document. Drag the scanned PDFs back together or merge the PDFs in the right order, so a ten page contract travels as one tidy file instead of a stack of pictures. It is the same habit as assembling any document, and it keeps receipts, leases and invoices easy to file as a single unit.
Clean it up and send
A fresh scan is usually a touch heavy and sometimes has a page the wrong way round. Remove or reorder pages to drop an accidental double capture, and rotate the PDF if one page came out sideways. Then compress the PDF to bring the file size down for emailing or uploading. What you get is a proper, sharp, searchable-feeling document straight from your pocket, no scanner and no app required.
