PDF vs PDF/A: what's the difference and which to choose?

Published 2026-08-18 · Education

PDF and PDF/A look alike but have different purposes and guarantees. Three minutes to clarify.

Standard PDF compared to PDF/A archive format

What is a standard PDF?

A regular PDF (ISO 32000) is designed to reproduce a document faithfully on any reader. Flexible, it can include fonts, links, forms and annotations.

What is PDF/A?

PDF/A (ISO 19005) is a subset of PDF designed for archiving: embedded fonts, no external dependencies (no JavaScript or encryption), to guarantee readability over the long term.

When to choose which?

Remember the essentials: everyday documents (bills, letters) get a regular PDF. For long-term legal or administrative archiving, prepare a PDF/A version.
