Fill out a PDF form on your phone without printing

Published 2026-09-25 · Tutorial

There is no worse admin chore than receiving a form and realising it needs printing, filling by hand and scanning back. On a phone you can skip the whole loop: type your answers directly in the form, tick the boxes, add your signature and save the completed file, all in a few minutes. Every modern phone handles at least the basics of filling a PDF form, and the result is a clean, sendable file. Here is how to fill out a PDF form on your phone, on iPhone and Android, without a printer or special software.

Why filling forms on a phone just works now

Modern PDF forms carry interactive fields: the author of the file defined where the answers go, how long each text box is and which boxes can be ticked. Because the fields are described inside the file, any reader app can show them and let you type straight in. You no longer have to write in cramped handwriting or guess a box size; the form behaves like a web form, accepting text, checks and dates, and saving it all back into the file when you are done.

iPhone: fill with the built-in preview tools

On an iPhone, open the PDF from Files, Mail or the Files provider and tap it to open Apple's preview. If the form has fillable fields, tap a field and a keyboard appears so you can type your answer; checkbox fields become tappable. Place the cursor, type, and move to the next field with the toolbar arrows. For anything the form does not expose, use the Markup button (the pen icon) to draw, add text or place a signature onto the page, then save the file back to Files.

Android: use a reading app or your drive app

On Android, most PDF reading apps such as the built-in file viewer, Google PDF viewer or Adobe Acrobat Reader present fillable fields as you open the file, and tapping a field opens the text input. Google Drive also fills forms directly: open the PDF in Drive, tap the pencil or edit icon, type in the fields and save back to Drive. If the form is a scan with no interactive fields, switch to the app's annotate mode and place text boxes or a handwritten mark over the answers.

Type, tick and add a signature

Beyond plain text, forms ask for ticks, dropdowns and dates. In a reader app these controls work like their web equivalents: tap a checkbox to mark it, open a dropdown to choose an option, and use the date widget where one is attached. For the signature line, most apps let you draw with your finger or insert the signature you already saved, exactly as in the guide to signing a PDF on your phone. Take your time and place each signature in its field, because once you save, the marks are meant to stay.

Save and send the completed file

When the form is filled, save it rather than closing the preview: most readers write the completed fields back into the PDF, so the file keeps your answers. Send it by reply, upload or share sheet exactly as you would any document. If the recipient only needs a record and you want to stop the fields being edited, you can keep the signature and the form permanent before sending, a step worth doing for an agreement or an application so the completed version is the one that travels.

When the form fights back

Sometimes a form is locked, requires a password, or came in as a scan with no fields at all. If it is protected and you own it, unlock the PDF first; if it is a scanned page, treat it like a document and add your answers as annotations over the printed lines. If the completed file matters as a record, back it up by compressing the PDF and saving it somewhere safe. With those habits, no printed form ever sends you to the office again.
