Combine a cover letter and CV into one PDF file to apply

Published 2026-09-04 · How-to

Most recruiters want two things from you: a cover letter and a résumé. Sending them as two separate attachments works, but it doubles the number of files a busy recruiter has to open, and there is always a risk one of them never gets seen. Combining both into a single PDF is the cleaner move: one file, one download, the right order, and no chance of a missing attachment on an application.

Why one PDF beats two attachments

A single file removes friction. Recruiters and applicant tracking systems often scan attachments automatically, and a combined PDF means your cover letter is always read right before your résumé, in the order you intended. It also keeps the pair together if the recruiter saves the file or forwards it to a colleague, so the application cannot be split by accident.

The right order: letter first, CV second

Put the cover letter first and the résumé after it, because that is the order a reader naturally consumes them. The letter introduces you and frames your story, then the résumé backs it up with dates, roles and results. A single PDF keeps that sequence fixed, which is something two separate attachments cannot guarantee.

Keep the size small enough to send

One file should not mean a heavy file. PDFs with embedded photos or high-resolution scans inflate fast, and an application over the common email limit gets rejected before anyone reads it. If your combined file is big, compress the PDF before you send, so the application arrives quickly and never bounces.

Use clean text, not a scan

Recruiters and tracking systems both prefer text they can search, copy and index. A scanned cover letter is a picture of words, which means it cannot be keyword-matched and may be skipped entirely. Build both documents from typable text so every skill and keyword stays readable, and keep your signature or photo as a small image if you must have one.

Name the file like a professional

A file named CV.pdf says nothing to a recruiter. Name it with your first and last name plus the role, like firstname-lastname-application.pdf, so it is instantly recognizable and sorts cleanly in a downloads folder. The same file name works whether the recruiter stores it locally or forwards it to a hiring manager.

Protect it and check the layout

Your application PDF will circulate through several hands, so protect the PDF with a password if you want to limit what other people can do with it. Before you send, skim every page on screen to confirm nothing shifted: no cut-off margins, no overlapping text, no blank page. A quick mail merge of the two documents plus a check of the result is all it takes to look perfectly put together.
