Add page numbers to a PDF: position and style choices

Published 2026-08-24 · How-to

Reports, books and contracts read far better with page numbers. Here is how to add them to a PDF and where to place them for the cleanest result.

Adding page numbers to a PDF footer

Why page numbers matter

Page numbers help your reader navigate, refer to a specific section and keep printed pages in order. For any multi-page document they are the small detail that makes it feel finished and professional.

Where to place them

Most documents put the number in the bottom centre or bottom corner. Formal and academic files often use the top corner instead. Pick a position that does not crowd the body text, such as a small figure in the footer.

Choose a style that fits

You can show a bare number, add a prefix like Page 3, or let the tool count from a set starting point so covers and title pages stay unnumbered. Keep the font subtle so the number supports the layout rather than fighting it.

Add them in a few clicks

Load the document in a page-number tool like Add page numbers, choose the position, style and start value, then download. The numbers are drawn into the file permanently, so they survive sharing and printing. If a page looks off afterwards, rotate it with Rotate PDF.
